The new dance season is here, bringing with it the thrill of fresh choreography. Choreography is where my heart truly lies; it’s the creative outlet that fills me with joy and fulfillment. However, it also brings along its own set of challenges, including anxiety, fear, and a nagging case of imposter syndrome.
Every year, as I embark on creating new choreography, doubts about the quality of my work inevitably creep in. I’m sure many of you can relate to these feelings. To help overcome these self-doubts and quiet the negative thoughts, here are a few strategies that I find useful:
Embrace the Process: Remember that creativity is a journey, not a destination. Allow yourself to explore and experiment without the pressure of perfection. Each step, whether it leads to a breakthrough or not, is valuable.
Set Small Goals: Break down your choreography into manageable sections. Achieving these smaller goals can provide a sense of accomplishment and help you build momentum.
Seek Feedback: Share your work with trusted colleagues or friends. Constructive feedback can offer new perspectives and validate the hard work you’ve put into your choreography.
Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Recognize that self-doubt is a common experience, and it doesn’t define your worth or talent. Treat yourself with the same compassion you would offer to a friend.
Celebrate Successes: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Celebrating your successes can boost your confidence and motivation.
Stay Inspired: Surround yourself with sources of inspiration, whether it’s other dancers, choreographers, or different forms of art. Keeping your creative well full can help alleviate feelings of inadequacy.
Reflect on Your Growth: Look back at your past work and recognize how far you’ve come. Reflecting on your progress can remind you of your growth and reinforce your abilities.
By implementing these strategies, you can navigate through the challenges of choreography with greater ease and confidence. Remember, every creative endeavor is a step towards growth, and your unique voice as a choreographer is valuable and worthy.
