I just got back from an intense choreography trip. Three days, five dances and a choreography workshop. Although I returned home exhausted and sore, (apparently I am old now), my soul is light and happy. I had so much fun! I don't think my work is that extraordinay, but I hope my students felt my love and joy. Dancing just really makes me happy. It doesn't matter the style or genre. Every piece I worked on filled me with so much happiness. In an effort to ensure our students have correct technique or have the tricks that seemingly feel like a requirement in the competition world, I fear we might sometimes forget that most important part of our job is to share the joy that dance brings. That is what our kids need. That is what the world need. Joy, happiness, and fun.
One of the best experiences of my trip was something I haven't done before. I had the opportunity to offer a choreography workshop. I wrote a curriculum that highlighted important espects of choreography, taught about plagarism is the dance world, discussed inspiration, and provided a process to choreography. The first day was mostly lecture and discussion. The second day the students were able to use what they learned and work together to create a piece. I was blown away by what these kids created. It really was beautiful to see. As their teacher, I was honored to be able to open their minds and creativity and witness special growth in each of them.
I seriously love my job!
I hope as we move to a new season we remember to have fun and bring that fun, joy and happiness to our students.
